How it Works

What is a "wood burning outside furnace"?

An outdoor furnace is as the name implies - a furnace that sits outdoors. The furnace is a wood-fired, water-jacketed stove. The water in the jacket is simply heated and pumped underground through insulated pipes to the building that needs to be heated. At this point the heat from the water is extracted and the cold water returned to the furnace.

Why should I use one?

Safety. The furnace is made to be situated in the yard - away from the house - therefore the dangers of wood stove fires in the house are eliminated.

Convenience. The furnace is outside near the wood pile, so the mess of sawdust, smoke, ashes, bugs and dirt stay outside. Burn time averages can reach 48 hours or more per fill. One furnace can heat multiple buildings.

Cost Savings. With energy prices (oil, gas, electricity) being what they are, wood is the perfect fuel. It is inexpensive, renewable and abundant. Heat your home, your work shop, your pool ... heat it all.

Exactly how does it work?

The firebox is surrounded by water. When the temperature drops below 160°F, the air injection system activates and combustion air is forced on the fire. This causes the fire to instantly go from a dormant stage to an intense hot burn. In minutes, the temperature of the water in the system reaches 180°F and the air injection turns off. The fire, now starved for air returns to a dormant stage, burning very little wood. Meanwhile, the hot water in the system is being pumped in insulated pipes to the building(s) constantly.

The hot water can be used in a new or existing forced air system, in-floor heating, domestic hot water tanks, hot water baseboards, pools, hot tubs or even a clothes dryer. The hot water, after traveling around giving up its heat, returns to the outdoor furnace and starts the process over again.
